Indonesia disaster relief

In the light of the recent disaster in the far-east, many people are wondering how best to help. The following ideas may be of help or interest, but are not meant to be comprehensive.

Some general thoughts...

• If you give donations to registered charities, remember to GiftAid it if you can. In case anyone doesn't know, this means the charity can reclaim tax on it. You can only do this if you have actually paid the tax on your income!
• In addition to the well-rehearsed arguments about making sure that your money is 'well-spent' and 'gets to where it is needed', consider that many indigenous organisations will not have British charitable status. That doesn't necessarily mean they are inefficient or corrupt and could well mean they know better what the problems are and can assist in a more positive way with greater respect for local culture and feelings.
• If you know anyone from or with connections in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand or wherever, it can spread goodwill to support programmes they are fundraising for.
• Below are a couple of Indonesian appeals. This is not to indicate they are any more worthy than those for other countries, but reflect the recent involvement of the writer with Indonesia.
• Don't be put off making donations because you've heard of examples of abuse, inefficiency, fraud etc. In a huge disaster relief exercise such as this, this is, to some extent, probably inevitable. There are even scam or fraud appeals, which is outrageous. However, the only way you can be sure none of your money is misused is not to make a donation.
• If you want to donate a largish amount, it's worth considering donating to more than one organisation - not putting all your eggs in one basket.

Most of the 'frontline', high-profile appeals on TV etc. seem to be via the DEC.
Not all registered charities working on the disaster are covered by DEC.
